January 6, 2025
A “National Day of Mourning” has been declared by President Joe Biden to honor the passing of President Jimmy Carter, Jr., the 39th President of the United States. Governor Jim Pillen, in accordance with the executive order, announced that state public servants will be granted a day of leave on Thursday, January 9, 2025, per the Nebraska Revised Statutes 84-1001(3).
Due to these federal and state actions, January 9, 2025, will be considered a Day of Mourning for the University of Nebraska and eligible employees will be granted “declared leave” per their FTE status.
In observance, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln will be closed, and all classes will be canceled on Thursday, January 9. Faculty should work directly with their students in rescheduling any impacted course requirements.
This day will be recognized as a paid declared holiday for all regular leave-eligible employees. Designated essential employees are expected to report as scheduled and will be compensated in accordance with campus payroll policies and procedures. Payroll Services will provide additional guidance to the university's business community regarding leave processing and reporting.
The University Health Center will remain open Thursday, January 9. The Events Calendar at events.unl.edu will be updated to reflect rescheduled campus events as information becomes available.
